I was told a while back that it’s no longer the terrible two’s I had to look forward to, but the terrible three’s. I remember thinking, “Wait…what?! So, our 2 year old child saying NO to everything, protesting nap/bedtime, not wanting to change out of clothes or diapers, choosing a pair of pants or a shirt out of 3 choices and then refusing to wear it, using the potty while we read to her without fail for a year and then refusing to use it again, wanting to get into the car seat, but then not wanting to get out of the car seat, full on debates about having bath time and then once in the tub debating why bath time is over, and the all time favorite switcheroo of what/when she will and will not try foods or eat during each meal, deliberately yelling over and interrupting Devin and I trying to have a 2 second conversation that doesn’t involve her…that’s not terrible two’s?” Well, what if the list keeps going? Does that still not count? Hahahah The glory days of Motherhood have only just begun, as some might add with pun intended. I get it. Touché (“clink”) !
Yes, I can see how this comes off as a rant. It’s not the intention. My point is, no matter how we approach her or how much time we spend talking about all the things we’re managing during this phase, it’s all emotional. In other words, her understanding of why we do or don’t do certain things is pretty clear at this point. It’s more about how she feels about doing or not doing certain things that gets complicated. Truth is, there is only so much we can do as parents to help them manage their emotions as individuals and how that correlates with the concept of free will as a young person. When a child is having a meltdown, trying to reason with them is farfetched, and it will remain so until well after their teenage years. Hooray! It’s due to the underdevelopment of the prefrontal cortex. There is plenty of research on this.
So I ask myself, “Outside of all the scholarly advise we already put into practice, what else CAN we do to enable her to focus on the good of a situation before going the other route that leads to an emotional outburst?” For me, the answer is … set the mood. I’m not getting into detail with all the things I do that require preparation and time. Instead, I want to share with you something we use that is so simple and quick, it almost seems ridiculous…but…it totally works. It’s no lie, another Young Living essential oil based product. I know. It was hard for myself to believe at first.
The easiest way I can explain how this is possible, is like this. Have you ever been driving and all of a sudden you find yourself behind a stinky garbage truck and it’s a single lane, there’s traffic and now you’re stuck there sucking in all the funk coming in through your car vents? No sense in putting the windows down either. Doesn’t that get you in a nasty mood? It sure gets me livid! If there was a way to block the smell out while you’re stuck driving behind a garbage truck, do you think you’d get as upset? Probably, not as much and at that point mostly because they move pretty slow. Now, have you ever walked into a store and the second you walk in you get this amazing aroma that makes your mind snap into a realm of all this happiness that makes you want to spend money and not want to leave? Anyway, my point in bringing these 2 different scenes into your mind’s eye is, our sense of smell can make or break our day.
