To piggyback on a recent book review post, here are a few more must reads that I felt would be best utilized if bought as a bundle.
These are the books that I read back to back and I believe geared us up to the max on this new Mom/Dad journey.
1. What To Expect When You’re Expecting
The first one I can almost guarantee that if you’ve been or are pregnant you already know about: It is What To Expect When You’re Expecting By Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel. I’m not going to say much about this read because I feel it’s one of those books you either love or don’t love.
I will say that for me, it was used more as an encyclopedia on what to expect pre and post pregnancy. A sort of reference book if you will. Definitely not a straight read through like you would a storybook, but very useful nonetheless.
2. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding
The second book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, by the La Leche League International if read in conjunction with Being There: Why Prioritizing Motherhood in the First Three Years Matters by Erica Komisar, the book I mentioned in my last post, reinforced advocating for my own parenting.
This principle I’ve found is especially necessary for us because of my being a breastfeeding Mother. So much came into play when the baby arrived and I’d made the decision to breastfeed.
One of the many reasons I love this book is the positive attitude and motivating tone it delivers. I feel those of us who are physically able and wholeheartedly choose to follow through with breastfeed need the reassurance and guidance this book provides.
I say this also, because I have been breastfeeding for over a year now and yes, it’s challenging, but I am not one bit ashamed of it or my Mommy milk loving baby.
I also think this book is very helpful to Fathers-to-be because both Mom and baby need their Papa’s love and support and this book offers ways in which to do that.
3. Whoa, Baby!
The 3rd book I’m going to mention here is one that I used straight up and for all intents and purposes as a go to for humor in all the wild things to come after those long 9 months of pregnancy.
It was another book I picked up during my internship at iHeart. The Breakfast Club was interviewing Kelly Rowland on her new book Whoa, Baby!: A Guide for New Moms Who Feel Overwhelmed and Freaked Out (and Wonder What the #*$& Just Happened).
The more I read this book in researching what questions they could ask her, the more I was reminded why I’ve always sort of unintentionally favored Kelly over Beyonce. I remember I practically begged to have a copy of this book.
Just like in her book Whoa Baby! She comes off as genuinely and innocently a; proud to have been freaked out, but now very savvy New Mom. Let me just put it this way, if I could have it my way...she would be my Bestest Mom Friend!
