We've been juicing and making smoothies together since before our little one arrived. When she was ready to eat solids we made homemade purée's that we'd store in reusable food pouches. They were super convenient, inexpensive, and I was able to make meals in advance and store them in the freezer, which was A.W.E.S.O.M.E. !!!

I pretty much tried all kinds of fruit and veggie combinations (ie. spinach, kale, ginger, carrots, celery, cucumber, etc.) making sure to include apples because they cut the strong flavors out plus they make for less water or milk. I do want to point out that the quality of the juicer is very important because texture is EVERYTHING! Below you'll see the one we own, which I kid you not, is just about 10 years old and works like we just bought it yesterday!

Now that she's two she's lost the interest in the pouches, but we've continued to promote eating her fruits and veggies by including her in the process of making her juices and smoothies. She loves helping pick the produce, rinse them, naming, describing, and placing them in the blender. When using the juicer she hands them to me. The smile on her face when she realizes she's made her very own juice or smoothie is priceless.

As shown in this video her smoothies are kefir, yogurt, coconut milk, and water based. I alternate between hemp seeds or chia seeds (about 1/2 tbsp). She doesn't care much for meat, so this is how we get our protein in. Depending on the combinations, I tend to add a tablespoon of peanut butter too.

The recipe for this smoothie is (*Please note that all ingredients are from Trader Joe's):

  • 1 apple

  • 1 banana

  • 2 tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup or so of plain kefir

  • Baby handful of spinach

  • 5 blackberries

  • Baby handful of hemp

  • 1 cup of purified water
